The Lawrence Township Education Foundation received a grant of $4,336 from Janssen Pharmaceuticals at the Jan. 7 school board meeting to purchase greenhouses for every elementary school in the district and Lawrence Intermediate School. This grant aims to improve the existing outdoor classrooms on the school grounds at Ben Franklin Elementary and LIS and includes the addition of new outdoor classrooms for the three elementary schools in the township that currently do not have them.

Students will be able to see firsthand how weather impacts growing conditions, gain a better understanding of gardening and growing native plants, learn about symbiotic planting and life cycles, and learn about heat transfer and sustainability energy.

“We are extremely thankful for this grant and the ongoing support of Janssen Pharmaceuticals,” said Karen Faiman, LTEF executive director. “This grant will have students engaged in authentic, hands-on learning experiences through the addition of a greenhouse at each school.”

LTEF is a nonprofit organization that fosters educational excellence, creativity, and achievement in the Lawrence Township Public Schools. Through grant requests from teachers and school administrators, LTEF funds programs that will have a substantial and lasting impact on Lawrence Township public school students.
