Barack Obama was declared the next President of the United States on October 31 at Village School. The students and parents voted in a mock election with Obama receiving 566 votes to John McCain’s 165.##M:[more]##

Denise Wilder, the school’s media specialist for seven years, organized the mock election program. She set up the program where each vote was cast on a laptop.

The students prepared for the election by participating in “The Whistle Stop Project,” a program coordinated by fifth grade teachers Vanessa Clax and Rachel Farro that allowed them to investigate and evaluate the positions of candidates running for national office. The students visited various workshop stations based upon American policy in Iraq, the environment, health care, immigration, national security, economy, and education.

At the conclusion of the “Whistle Stop Project,” the students held an electronic mock election to make an issues-based decision about which candidate best aligns with the student’s own positions.
