Victim response team volunteers needed

Womanspace is looking for volunteers for its victim response teams.

Womanspace is a nonprofit organization. Its mission is to provide services to individuals and families affected by domestic and sexual violence.

Womanspace said it needs volunteers for its Domestic Violence Victim Response Team and Sexual Assault Support Services Advocate Team. The next volunteer training session is set to begin March 5.

Womanspace said team members respond to local police stations or hospitals and provide victims with support, information and referrals.

Womanspace said team members provided services to 732 domestic violence victims and 73 sexual assault victims in 2012.

Womanspace said qualified volunteers communicate anf well with others and maintain confidentiality. Other volunteer requirements include being at least 18 years of age, a resident of or employee in the Mercer County area, have avalid driver’s license, available transportation and time to attend trainings and meetings.

Volunteers are required to be fluent in English, but Womanspace encourages bilingual individuals to apply.

Womanspace said applicants must submit to a background check and fingerprinting. Qualified volunteers will not have a criminal history.

Womanspace said volunteers will undergo at least 80 hours of training on topics including the law, sensitivity to the needs of victims and how to provide appropriate responses at a very critical time.

Womanspace said trained volunteers are on-call two to four shifts per month.

The application deadline is Feb. 15.
