A new town needs a new logo, and (soon-to-be-consolidated) Princeton will have one, thanks to a contest held jointly by the borough and the Arts Council of Princeton.

Princeton and the Arts Council of Princeton asked contestants to create a logo that was that was “symbolic in its representation of the new municipality.”

The award-winning logo was designed by Jeff Leonard, an industrial designer and resident of Princeton.

“My inspiration was to take the traditional logo and bring it forward to today’s Princeton,” Leonard said.

Seventy-five designs were submitted to the Arts Council of Princeton and narrowed down to three finalists. A panel of five judges including borough mayor Yina Moore, township mayor Chad Goerner and marketing professor Crystal McKenzie picked the final design.

Residents of Princeton Township and Princeton Borough made the historic choice to merge the two municipalities Nov 8, 2011. The towns will be consolidated as of Jan. 1, 2013. Democrat Liz Lempert was elected mayor Nov. 6, 2012.

Moore said the artwork for the new logo helps symbolize the new beginning.

“I believe this new design is truly representative of the town of Princeton,” Moore said.

The designs of the three finalists, including the winner, will be displayed in the municipal building at 400 Witherspoon St. until the reorganization ceremony on Jan. 1. More information is online at princetonboro.org.
