Kelsey Theatre presents “Sunday in the Park with George”

Laura Gougher of Newtown, Pa., as Dot and John Zimmerman of Hamilton as George star in Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George” at MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre, Jan. 11-20.

PinnWorth Productions is set to present Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George” Jan. 11 through Jan. 20 at Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theatre.

“Sunday in the Park with George” is loosely based on the life of post-Impressionist George Seurat and the creation of his painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” The story follows the painter’s struggles between creating art and life with his mistress, Dot. A preview of the play can be seen on YouTube. The play won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The cast features John Zimmerman of Hamilton as George, and Laurie Gougher of Newtown, Pa., as his mistress, Dot.

Ensemble cast members include Dave Walter of Allentown, Donna Reed of Bordentown, John Shanken-Kaye of Doylestown, Pa., Pamela Jorgensen of Franklin Park, Julia Lupi of Freehold, Dwayne Bailey, Elizabeth Lackey, Nicholas Pecht and Jim Petro and Melissa Geerlof of Hamilton, Megan Sherow of Millstone, Susan Fowler of New Hope, Pa., Susan Hoffman and Jenny Weiner of Robbinsville and Dan Slothower of Plainsboro.

Peter de Mets of Newtown, Pa., will be the musical director, with costumes by Kate Pinner of Allentown, and sound and lighting design by Robert Terrano of East Windsor.

Performances are scheduled for Jan. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. A reception with the cast and crew is scheduled to follow the opening night performance on Jan. 11. Kelsey Theatre is located on the college’s West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $14 for students and children. Tickets are available by phone at (609) 570-3333 and online at kelseytheatre.net.
