UPDATE: Hopewell Township is now included in the Trenton Water Works’ boil-water advisory zone.
UPDATE 2 3:26 p.m.: The advisory is now expected to extend into Saturday at least.
Trenton Water Works issued a boil water advisory for its customers this morning, after equipment in its water distribution system malfunctioned, leaving chlorination levels too low. Chlorine is used to disinfect the water and make it safe to consume.
TWW customers in Trenton, Lawrence, Ewing, Hopewell and Hamilton should boil their water until the advisory is lifted. TWW estimated at 7 a.m. Sept. 27 that the advisory will last for a few hours, until repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.
TWW issued a map on its Facebook page that shows the area affected by the boil water advisory. It includes the entire TWW service area in Hamilton and Lawrence, and nearly all of its service area Ewing and Trenton.
All TWW customers in Trenton, Hamilton, Ewing and Lawrence should bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using or use bottled water. A statement issued by TWW said boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, preparing foods, mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks, washing vegetables and fruit, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
TWW also recommended the following:
Discarding uncooked food, beverages, or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisoryKeeping boiled or bottled water in the refrigerator for drinking.Rinsing hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleacher gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle.Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.Using only boiled water to treat minor injuries.Providing pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).
