Steinway Society to host performances and scholarship competition

Continuing its 24th season, The Greater Princeton Steinway Society will present a musicale by the celebrated pianist Svetlana Smolina.

The performance is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Recital Hall of Jacobs Music, 2540 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville. A social hour with refreshments and conversation with Smolina will follow the program.

Smolina has performed with major orchestras worldwide and in such prestigious halls as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Sacher Hall, and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory Hall.

Her recent engagements have included recitals at Steinway Hall and Merkin Hall in New York City, and at the Long Island Mozart Festival.

Smolina’s upcoming program features works by Schumann, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt and Kapustin.

The Steinway Society’s 2013-14 season will include two more performances by classical pianists; Paul Sheftel is scheduled to play Feb. 16 and Clipper Erickson on March 16.

An additional jazz concert featuring Hopewell pianist Tara Buzash is set for Feb. 2.

All of the performances begin at 3 p.m. in the Jacobs Music Recital Hall.

The season concludes with the society’s annual Winners’ Recital set for May 4. The performance features this year’s scholarship winners playing their prize-winning competition pieces. Open auditions, for pianists age seven to 18, are scheduled for are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 5o at Jacobs Music.

Tickets for individual musicales are $18 for adults and $10 for full-time students

Founded in 1989, the Greater Princeton Steinway Society is dedicated to developing the talent of young piano students. Ticket sales help fund the Society’s annual scholarship program.
