Rowing team takes fourth at club championship

Kyle James (Princeton HS) and Sean Kelly (West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS) won silver in Men’s Open Weight Pairat the US Rowing Club National Championships in Camden in July.

Princeton National Rowing Association’sMercer Junior Rowing Club finished fourth in the overall team standings in 2013 US Rowing Club National Championship.

Mercer earned eight medals in 10 final events for a fourth place finish among a pool of close to 1,500 crews from 96 clubs competing in 71 events.

This was the clubs first appearance at the championship, which took place at Cooper River in Camden July 10 through 14

The men’s Open Weight Pair of Sean Kelly (West Windsor-Plainsboro South High School) and Kyle James (Princeton High School) claimed the silver medal, while Aaron Goodman (PHS) and Finn Ludwig (WW-P South) finished third.

The women also had a strong showing with the Women’s Senior Lightweight 4 lineup, consisting of Vicki Jorgensen (WW-P North), Rena White (PHS), Rachel Calabro (Robbinsville High School), Geena Fram (Lawrenceville High School) and coxswain, Noa Rothstein (Council Rock High School), finishing first to earn a gold medal.

The Women’s U17 8+ also came in first place. Team members include Kate Hickey (Notre Dame High School), Rena White (PHS), Stephanie Tam (PHS), Hannah Reim (Montgomery High School), Cate Porter (Hopewell Valley Central High School), Badia Shehab (HVCHS) Elise Gorberg (WW-P North HS) Rachel Mumau (Millstone Township), and coxswain, Sydney Holgado (RHS).

Also contributing to the overall team medal count were silver medals earned in the Women’s Intermediate Lightweight 4, Open Weight Pair and Intermediate Lightweight Pair, as well as a bronze medal in the Senior Lightweight Pair. Finally, both men and women came in second in the Junior A U19 pair event.
