Emily King of Lawrenceville and Christian Tringali of Hamilton Square were the first place finisher in the Pennington School’s Run for the Cure race Oct. 20, 2013.
The Pennington School held its fifth annual Run for the Cure race to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure Oct. 20.
A record number of more than 300 students, faculty, parents and friends of The Pennington School turned out to run or walk and raise money for the foundation devoted to seeking a cure for breast cancer.
The event, organized by the senior peer leaders, raised close to $8,000 for the foundation.
Peer leaders, a select group of Pennington seniors, serve as mentors to groups of freshmen; they also organize several community service events each year.
Peer leaders Rachel Shavel of Yardley, Pa., and Charles Paige of Pennington spearheaded organization of this year’s run. Abbey Pitarresi of Princeton, also a peer leader, designed the logo for the 2013 event.
Sophomores Christian Tringali of Hamilton Square and Emily King of Lawrenceville were the male and female first-place winners, respectively.
The “Pink Cup” award, given to the team that expresses the most “pink spirit,” went to the school’s drama team. Deep in rehearsal for the upcoming fall play, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, they wore T-shirts with a Hamlet parody: “To run or not to run, that is the question.”
Local Komen for the Cure representative, Cindy Ricker of Pennington, spoke before the race, reminding participants why they were there, hoping for a day when a Run for the Cure is not needed.
