In preparation for the coming school year, some Lawrence High School students are participating in AP Preseason.

LHS teacher Ann Hertzog is leading the program, renamed from AP Boot Camp due to a more academic focus than other programs in the country, for students who are enrolled in selected AP courses.

Throughout the week of July 28, participating students take part in hands-on activities to practice skills that will prepare them for their AP courses and for college. Targeted skills include teamwork, critical reading, and problem solving.

LHS is piloting the program this year and hopes to expand it to more courses and to other districts in future summers. Nine students are enrolled in the program that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily and is $175 per person.

Hertzog hopes to help students develop an “AP attitude” as they spend the week doing team building activities, analyzing primary and secondary sources, discussing the college application process, and developing the nine essential thinking skills for AP courses.

National Honor Society student volunteers join the AP Preseason students to form a collaborative team of advanced thinkers.
