Friends of the Lawrence Library awarded scholarships to two local students May 8.

Lawrence councilman Stephen Brame presented the $1,500 scholarships to Carolyn Keimig and Gabija Kertenyte on behalf of the Friends of the Lawrence Library at the library’s volunteer appreciation reception.

The recipients were chosen based on their scholarship, character and service to their schools and community.

Honor student Keimig is a senior at Notre Dame High School. In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, she is also an active member of her school’s community. Keimig plays in the school’s jazz band as well as the varsity lacrosse team.

Keimig is plans to attend Penn State University this fall.

Lawrence High School senior Kertenyte is the daughter of Skaiste Kerteniene and Vytautas Kertenis.

When she arrived from Lituania in the seventh grade Kertenyte did not speak English, but by the end of eighth grade she had placed out of the English as a Second Language classes. While at LHS she continues to challenge herself by taking honors and Advance Placement classes.

She plans to pursue a liberal arts education at Barnard College in New York City this fall.

The Friends of the Lawrence Library fund a variety of children’s and adult programs at the library in addition to the two scholarships. These programs are financed by money raised through their book sales and annual membership dues.
