A Lawrence Middle School student won the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Award Feb. 2.

Eight grader, Ellen “Nelle” Evans, was selected as New Jersey’s middle youth volunteer and received a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for national recognition events in May.

Evans received the award for volunteering her time to organizing food and clothing drives, creating a library in a local nature center and coaching a first grade soccer team. She is also a Girl Scout.

Prudential Financial started the award in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1995. Since its founding, the program has awarded more than 100,00 students for their volunteer efforts.

Two students are chosen from each state for their exemplary community service participation. These students come together in Washington D.C. for four days of events including galas, a dinner cruise and a tour of the city.

While in Washington D.C., Prudential announces which state honorees won the national recognition.
