A new exhibit, “Subway to Gallery: The Street Artists,” is now on display at the Lakefront Art Gallery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton

“Subway to Gallery” features images related to graffiti as well as graffiti itself, in hopes to reinvent street artwork by placing it in a non-traditional venue.

“Viewing graffiti art up close with the time to absorb the images is a very different experience from seeing it on a wall or a fence while driving by,” says Sheila Geisler, curator of the Lakefront Gallery. “And many of these artists do not have the resources to show this work in a gallery setting, so this is a new experience for both the viewer and the artist.”

Artists on display include Leon Rainbow, Will “Kasso” Condry, Dean “Ras” Innocenzi, Mek, Proze, Dave “Uhm” Orantes, Demer, Roy W. “Billy Brown” Hames III, Jonathan “Lank” Conner, Gentrified Prufrock, Ricardo Barros, Jon Naar and Andrew Wilkinson.

The exhibit is on display through Nov. 13. A closing reception, where many of the artists will be present to discuss their work, will be held on Nov. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Gallery is ADA-accessible and is located on the first first floor of the hospital along the mezzanine above the Roma Bank Café. To submit photographic art for consideration, contact Sheila Geisler, curator, at (732) 422-3676 or sgeisler@rci.rutgers.edu.
