Three Mercerville Elementary School students took home the top prizes in PEI Kids’ annual Child Assault Prevention and Bullying Prevention poster contest.

Winners are Joseph Cordero, Gabriella Mauro and Edison Simon.

The contest was open to Kuser, Mercerville and Wilson School third through fifth graders who participated in PEI Kids’ Child Assault Prevention and Bully Prevention workshops during the 2012-2013 school year. Students were required to illustrate strategies to reduce bullying, including self-assertive rather than aggressive or passive behaviors; the power of witnesses; and standing up for the rights of others.

“Every entry was impressive this year, but Mercerville students ‘wowed’ us the most with their creations! They creatively emphasized the importance of standing up as witnesses and reporting bullying incidents,” PEI Kids’ director of prevention services Melody Powell said in a statement.

According to Powell, last year, PEI Kids staff members presented a total of 549 workshops in more than 70 Mercer County schools. The organization has been New Jersey Child Assault Prevention (CAP) designee for Mercer County for more than 25 years
