American Baseball Coaches Association named Mercer County Community College baseball coach Kevin Kerins a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Regional Coach of the Year.

In the 2014 season, Kerins’ third year as head coach, the Vikings set an MCCC baseball record for most wins, with a final record of 40-8.

After earning the Region 19 and District titles, the Vikings competed at the NJCAA World Series for the first time since 2003.

One player, Heath Fillmyer of Roebling, was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the fifth round of the MLB draft, while a second player, catcher David Osnato of Hamilton, was selected to the NJCAA Team USA squad at the National Baseball Congress World Series in Kansas this summer. Fillmyer and Osnato were named First Team All-Americans.

Kerins said it is a tremendous honor to be selected for the award, but puts the credit squarely on the shoulders of his team.

“This very talented group of players made my job easier. They did the work on the field and in the gym. They played as a team and they trusted each other to get the job done,” Kerins said in a statement.
