Ewing High School celebrated the accomplishments the school’s 2018 senior student-athletes at the annual Senior Athletic Awards Night on June 5.
Highlighting the evening was the annual presentation of the Karas-McGurk award to a male and female student-athlete. The award is dedicated to the memory of Andy Karas and Joe McGurk, who were longtime supporters and benefactors of Blue Devil athletics.
Standout two-sport athlete Keri Capstack, who played for both the Blue Devils soccer and lacrosse programs, was awarded the Karas-McGurk Award. Capstack is headed to Rutgers University in the fall.
On the boys’ side, accomplished grappler Wayne Staub, who contributed a county championship and four stellar seasons to the EHS wrestling program, won the honor.
Staub, who also lettered in golf for the Blue Devils, will be attending Texas A&M to continue his studies. As Staub was in College Station fulfilling his collegiate responsibilities, his parents accepted the award on his behalf.
Capstack was also the winner of the NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete Award for 2018.
Two-sport athlete (girls’ field hockey, girls’ lacrosse) Lauren Ettenger, who will be attending The College of New Jersey, was named the Outstanding Female Senior Athlete.
Two-sport standout (boys’ soccer, boys’ lacrosse) Alex Jesseman, was recognized as the Outstanding Male Senior Athlete. Jesseman will be attending James Madison University in Virginia. He also won the Boys’ Lacrosse Award.
CVC Sportsmanship winner on the female side was EHS Softball hurler Lauren Christensen. She is headed to Rowan University. Christensen also won a Cross Country Award.
On the boys side, the CVC Sportsmanship award winner was EHS wrestler Lavinsky Collins, who graduates as the most decorated grappler in school history.
Collins is the all-time program leader in wins, a two time county champion, and finished in the top four in the state this past season. He will continue his wrestling career at Clarion University. Collins also won the Wrestling Award.
“The Ewing Public Schools are very proud of our senior athletes and wish them the best as they move out into the world beyond Ewing High School,” shared athletic director Bud Kowal.
