Ewing High School and the Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf’s FIRST Robotics team won the Chairman’s Award at the Buckeye Regional Robotics Competition in Cleveland in March.
Team 2016, also known as The Mighty Monkey Wrenches, competed against 51 teams from New York, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland and Canada.
The Chairman’s Award is given to the team that best demonstrates how they promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in their community and serve community members through volunteering. The team presents their service work through an essay, oral presentation and video.
Among their service projects, The Mighty Monkey Wrenches have an ongoing partnership with the Lion’s Club to help them refurbish eye glasses to be donate for those in need.
The team also works with HomeFront organizing science nights and a holiday party for kids in December featuring an appearance by Grammy-winning children’s artist Miss Amy.
They promote STEM through a Lego robotics team and tournament at Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf. Additionally, the team hosted a high school level robotics competition at for 37 teams at The College of New Jersey,
The team is set to compete at the World Robotics Competition scheduled for the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo. April 24 through 27.
