The Bordentown City Shade Tree Committee will commemorate National Arbor Day with its annual community Tree Planting set for Saturday, April 14. Arbor Day activities begin at 9 a.m. in front of City Hall at 324 Farnsworth Ave. Mayor Jim Lynch will kick-off the tree planting with an official Arbor Day proclamation address to welcome volunteers and residents.
Those interested in volunteering to assist the Shade Tree teams and volunteers in planting 15 new street trees at various locations throughout the city are welcome to attend. Volunteers should plan to get dirty—wear work clothes, work boots or waterproof shoes, and bring a shovel, broom and gardening gloves.
For 18 consecutive years, Bordentown City has earned the Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA Award for effectively managing public tree resources. Shade Tree Committee chair Al Barker said planning out this year’s tree planting was especially difficult due to weather, available tree variety selection and tree size.
“Timetables are critical in planning Arbor Day activities,” Barker said. “At least a week before trees are delivered to the Bordentown Public Works garage, the Public Works staffers must have the time to meet with Public Service to determine tree pit suitability and size, then to dig and mark tree pits for each tree’s planting.”
Residents that are interested in learning more about the value of street trees and caring for trees in front of their homes are invited to attend a Shade Tree Committee monthly meeting at Carlslake Community Center, Gilder Park Road. Meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m., every third Thursday of every month. The team needs new members and volunteers.
