WW-P Postmark

WW-P Pride will be manifest in a new way on October 23. The United States Postal Service is offering a commemorative postmark to honor the school district.

The postmark was designed by students and is a tribute to Avogadro’s Number, a chemistry constant that refers to the number of atoms and molecules in a gram mole of any chemical substance.

There’s no need to understand the chemical equation or its purpose to get the postmark. That can be obtained on Monday, October 23, at High School South. Bring a No. 10 standard envelope, self-addressed and stamped between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and the Princeton Junction postmaster will postmark the letter and have it sent to your address.

Avogadro’s constant is 6.02 times 10 to the 23rd power. Andrew Boyajian, a retired postal employee who now works as a substitute teacher in the district conceived the idea while filling in in Karen Galley’s chemistry classroom last year.

He noticed that the pattern was represented a number of ways in the classroom, and brought her attention to the approach of 10/23/2006.

Boyajian designed the postmark, and it is being issued through the Princeton Junction Post Office.

“This hasn’t been done for any other school district that I know of. It’s a first edition, something they do for special occasions”” said High School South Principal Charles Rudnick.
