The Township Council has approved four resolutions that will enable the mayor to apply for state Department of Transportation grants toward road and bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

One of the resurfacing repairs covers the area near Carnegie Center. Passed at the September 7 meeting, the resolutions authorize the mayor and clerk to submit electronic grant applications for 2011 to the DOT.

The first two grant applications will allow the township to apply for funding on the proposed resurfacing projects. The work covered in each grant application includes pavement repairs, milling and overlay, drainage improvements, improved signage and striping, inlet casting replacements, concrete sidewalks, handicap ramps, and detectable warning surfaces.

The first application allows the township to apply for grants toward the proposed resurfacing project on Roszel Road between Alexander Road and Carnegie Center Drive. The second would fund improvements to New Village Road between Edinburg Road and Old Trenton Road.

The third and fourth applications will be geared toward bicycle and pedestrian improvements. One of the grants would be used for creating dedicated bike lanes along Edinburg Road between Village Road West and the east entrance to Mercer County Park.

The other would be used for creating a dedicated eight foot-wide bituminous concrete pedestrian walkway to link seven office complexes next to Route 1, in and around the train station. All together, the project would provide approximately 1,500 feet of missing pedestrian pathway, surface lighting, handicap ramps, and other pedestrian safety improvements.
