High School South was the winner in New Jersey State Science Olympiad Competition’s high school level. High School South competed against 25 high schools, and will now compete in the National Championships to be held May 19 and 20 at Indiana University.##M:[more]##

South team members include Baohua Zahn, David Ku, David Liu, Liz Liu, Manu Venkataswaran, Warren Cai, Jerrald Chen, Ying-Ying Tran, Daphne Ezer, Sophia Izmailov, Richard Li, Lily Yu, Piyush Poddar, Charu Dhavalikar, and Sumona Bhattacharya. The alternates are Andre Vasquez and Pratik Nadkar. The coaches are Meenakshi Bhattacharya, Brendan Field, and Sunila Sharma.

First place awards were received by Warren Cai and Charu Dhavalikar for Dynamic Planet; Bohua Zahn and Ying-Ying Tran for Fermi Questions; Manu Venkataswaran and Bohua Zahn Remote Sensing; Manu Venkataswaran and Jerrald Chen for Rocks and Minerals; David Ku and Warren Cai for Scrambler; and Richard Lu and Liz Liu for Wright Stuff.

Second place awards were received by Charu Dhavalikar and David Ku for Astronomy; Sumona Bhattacharya and Warren Cai for Chem Lab; Sumona Bhattacharya and Sofia Izmailov for Food Science; Daphne Ezer and Lily Yu for Health Science, and Bohua Zahn and Sofia Izmailov for Practical Problem Solving.

Third place awards were received by Daphne Ezer and Sofia Izmailov for Disease Detectives; Sumona Bhattacharya and David Ku for Ecology; Lily Yu and Ying-Ying Tran for Entomology; and David Liu and Liz Liu for Storm the Castle.

Richard Li and Charu Dahvalikar received fourth place for Circuit Lab. Bohua Zahn and Jerrald Chen received sixth place for Physics Lab. Richard Lu and David Liu received sixth place for Robot Ramble.

Community Middle School took first place in Division B, the middle school level, and will also compete in the nationals. Grover Middle School took fourth place.
