USRowing selected Mercer Rowing Club team captain Elias Abilheira to be part of its Worlds Development.

The Princeton resident is one of eight boys identified at the Junior Mens High Performance Development Camp to form the core of the 2015 Men’s Junior Development Team which is set to represent the United States in international competition.

Abilheira was chosen for the Development Team based on his participation in the USRowing High Performance Camp in Pittsburgh, Pa., this summer.

The Development Team plans to travel to the site of the 1992 Olympic Rowing competition, the Catalan Rowing Center in Banyoles, Spain, this month to get an introduction to international training.

The USRowing contingent traveling to Spain also includes eight female sweep rowers, four male and four female scullers, and three coaches.

In other summer action, Mercer girl’s captain Rena White, also of Princeton, and Kate Hickey of Yardley, Pa., competed in a pair at the Junior World Championship Trials on July 7 to 8 at Mercer Lake.

Six boats vied for a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team to represent the United States at the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships in Hamburg, Germany Aug. 6 to 10. Competitors included two entries from the USRowing Junior National Team Selection Camp, one entry from the San Diego Rowing Club, and two entries from the Saugatauk Rowing Club.

White and Hickey placed third in the time trials which was enough to continue on to the best two-of-three final format. In each of the finals, Mercer placed third behind the Junior National Team Selection Camp A pair and the San Diego Rowing Club pair.

Abilheira, White, and Hickey are set to compete next with their Mercer teammates at the Royal Canadian Henley Regattas set for Aug. 3 to 10.
