Community Middle School will host a forum for parents about security at the school and police response to school crisis situations. The forum, which will be held Thurday, January 29, at CMS at 7:30 p.m., was organized after a number of threats against the school this year.##M:[more]##

The threats were found not to be credible. The most recent of the threats occurred on January 12. According to police, someone believed to be a student on a school bus called the police saying they had a shotgun. Students were redirected to High School North while the situation was investigated.

In November two students wrote terroristic threats on the wall of a CMS bathroom, including a statement that a bomb had been planted in the school.

Parents have pressured the school district to take action to ensure the safety of its students. Sergeant Jay Duffy will lead the presentation.

“”It’s going to show how the school and the police department works together to respond to emergencies. They’ll give parents advice on talking to students about school safety. They’ll discuss how it’s everyone’s responsibility,”” says Gerri Hutner, the information officer for the WW-P School District.

Hutner said the forum will also include a question and answer session. All parents are welcome, but Hutner said the forum is expected to focus mainly on concerns for CMS students and parents. She said the district is considering holding similar forums at other schools throughout the district in the future.

“”The administration and the police department felt that parents need to get more information, to understand how these situations are handled. They need to know more about what we can all do to keep schools safe,”” said Hutner.
