High School bands compete and raise funds for High School’s South Post Prom program on Saturday, May 14, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Playhouse, the original theater at South. Tickets are $10 at the door. Refreshments will be sold.

The annual event features a wide range of music including rock, metal, punk, alternative, reggae, pop, jazz, and a cappella styles, covers and original songs, to compete for prizes. Close to a dozen bands are expected to be on hand.

“The Battle of the Bands is always a great event,” says Lisa Pappa, one of four co-chairs of the Post Prom 2011 committee. “We’ve been doing this for several years now, and every year the bands get better and better.”

The first band to sign up was Curious George and the Road Trippers with South seniors Stephen Francisco (guitar and bass) and Robby Olsen (drums), and North senior Alex DeSimine (guitar and bass). The group is making its debut performance at the event.

Other bands include Lucille Clifton Overdrive, Cas, Mac and Groves, 2 Apart, Kaufman and Son Realty, the Four Winds, and Wastin’ and the Schwasters.

The event will be emceed by seniors Sergio Ingato and Connor McElwee and sophomore Erin McElwee.

The Post Prom group is a 501(c)3 organization, set up to raise funds to support South’s Post Prom event, which is held immediately following the prom in June. All seniors and their dates, as well as seniors who do not attend the prom, are welcome to attend this event at South designed to discourage drinking and driving after the senior prom by providing a fun, safe alternative.

With the help of volunteers, South is transformed into a theme area with food, games, and other fun activities and prizes. The event is funded by donations.

“Battle of the Bands is a fun evening for everyone, and makes a significant contribution to the Post Prom effort,” says Pappa.
