Children watch last year’s horse plowing.

Isles, Inc., is set to kick off spring gardening the old-fashioned way.

A team of horses from Howell Living History Farm will plow the organization’s community garden in Trenton.

Howell Living History Farm, a facility of the Mercer County Park Commission, representatives will demonstrate how farmers plowed at the turn of the 20th century. During the event, children will have the opportunity to direct the horses, shell corn and compost soil.

Isles Urban Agriculture manager Jim Simon says the tradition helps commemorate agricultural heritage and allows participants to reconnect with the soil and the crops that come from it.

Through the Garden Support Network, Isles provides technical support and training to people who grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables in 50 community and school gardens throughout Trenton. Gardeners in the Isles Garden Support Network harvest more than 50,000 pounds of fresh produce each year, increasing Trenton’s food supply and the food security of community residents.

The event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 8 at the garden,81 Chestnut Ave., Trenton.

A rain date is scheduled for April 10.

More information is online at isles.org.

UPDATE 4/8/14: Due to inclement weather, the event is rescheduled for April 10.
