Sandra Lebo-Guirguis, 21, of West Windsor earned her bachelor’s degree in psychological brain sciences at Johns Hopkins last month and is now bicycling across the country as a participant in Hopkins 4K for Cancer. Her future plans include a doctorate in psychology. She is spending the next year at Georgetown in D.C. as she applies to graduate schools.

“Leah Blom (one of the creators of the program) was on my soccer team,” she says. “Ever since she mentioned it to me, it has been something I wanted to do. This is the first summer I don’t have to be back early for soccer pre-season and I have the time to ride.

“I am dedicating my ride to my grandparents. My grandfather, an avid cyclist and cancer survivor, is a true inspiration on and off the bike. My grandmother is a strong, smart, courageous woman who I admire and am excited to have the opportunity to ride for.”

She is one of 23 students from Johns Hopkins and friends bicycling from Baltimore to San Francisco this summer to raise $60,”000 for the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, a residence for out-of-town cancer patients seeking treatment at Baltimore hospitals.

The fourth annual Hopkins 4K for Cancer began on May 29 in Baltimore. The students anticipate crossing the finish line at the Golden Gate Bridge, on Sunday, July 31. For information visit www.hopkins4k.org/.
