A team of students from High School South took the top honor at the 2013 Mercer County Consumer Bowl, beating out seven other area high schools in a quiz-show style competition on good consumer practices. It marked the second straight victory for South. The team included Matthew Sheffield, Peter Altamore, Ian Altamore, Joseph Wagner, and William Wagner. Sheffield is the team captain. The team’s adviser is teacher Maureen Leleszi.

The annual Consumer Bowl is held by the Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs and pits teams from local high schools against one another to test their knowledge on being a smart shopper. This year’s competition was held on February 21 at the Stone Terrace by John Henry’s in Hamilton.

The event was created in 1994 to encourage students to become smarter consumers, to be wary of scams and unfair business practices, and to be knowledgeable when obtaining services like home improvements or buying products such as vehicles and appliances. Call 609-989-6671 for information.

The South team will go on to compete at the Central Jersey Regional Consumer Bowl in Monmouth County on Wednesday, April 17.
