Fresh of their St. Patrick’s Day appearance on The Tonight Show, Celtic rock band Black 47 is set to perform in Princeton.
The concert is part of the band’s farewell tour of the United States.
Black 47 is disbanding after 25 years of playing a uniquely Irish form of rock ‘n’ roll together. The group plans to officially disband on Nov. 8, exactly 25 years after their first gig in the Bronx.
The group has played more concerts at Shea Stadium than The Beatles, shut down the city of Hoboken and appeared multiple times on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Black 47 are known for campaigning for the release of the Guilford Four and the Birmingham Six from British prisons and saving an Irish immigrant church from the wrecking ball.
The band has performed more than 2,500 concerts from pubs to stadium venues and released 14 albums, including their most recent, Last Call.
Black 47’s music touches on many social and political issues and the group has inspired other Irish-influenced bands such as Flogging Molly and The Dropkick Murphys.
The band is led by Irish author, playwright, and SiriusXM radio host Larry Kirwan with Geoffrey Blythe on saxophone, Thomas Hamlin on drums, Fred Parcells on trombone and penny whistle, Joseph Mulvanerty on uilleann pipes, flutes, and bodhran, and Joe Burcaw on bass.
The concert is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. April 4 at McCarter Theatre Center’s Berlind Theatre, 91 University Place, Princeton.
The performance is free and open to the public, however tickets are required.
