WW-P needs to make better fiscal choices

The WW-P Board of Education takes actions which are incongruous. The board outsourced the custodians to save money. Custodians who knew all the kids by name, and fixed everything in the buildings. Then the board approved the $13 million addition to Village School, with no referendum vote.

The administration and board cut ESL classes severely to save money. And then hired too many administrators.

The administration reduced the number of librarians in the high schools. And the board approved $113,000 for MAP testing.

For many months, the administration claimed that WW-P kids had lots of stress/mental health problems. The board approved a budget with no increase in guidance counselors, and a 1 percent increase for administration.

Administrators want to eliminate the German field trip, which costs WW-P nothing. Then the board approved spending $25,000 to send 10 teachers to California.

The administration had an $8 million surplus last year. Thus this year’s budget should be reduced by $8 million. And the surplus should be returned to taxpayers.

Instead, the board approved putting $2.5 million into capital reserves, which now total $20 million. That’s a huge amount for furnaces and roofs. And a tempting pot for misuse, such as building extravagant offices.
