Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes and the Board of Chosen Freeholders announced a new discount prescription drug program March 5.

This free program offers savings for Mercer County residents who pay full price at the pharmacy with the use of a Prescription Discount Card.

The program works in conjunction with ProAct, a subsidiary of Kinney Drugs based in Gouverneur, NY, which finds pharmacies that agree to accept the discount card for patients without prescription drug coverage. Essex and Salem counties also participate in this program.

The discount program covers all prescription medications, brand or generic, and some pet medications.

On average, participants can expect to save 10 to 20 percent on brand drugs and 20 to 70 percent on generic drugs.

The cards cannot be combined with a resident’s existing health insurance coverage, be used to reduce co-pays or with other discount programs.

The prescription discount card can be used at any participating pharmacy in Mercer County and at more than 55,000 pharmacies nationwide.

To receive a discount, present the card to the pharmacist when filling a prescription.

Hughes said discount cards are anonymous and one card can be used by the same family. There are no age or income requirements.

The cards are set to be mailed to Mercer County residents. They can also be obtained online at njrxdiscountcard.com.

A list of participating pharmacies is online at proactrxsavings.com/member-benefits/pharmacy-locator.
