Keep academic titles in WW-P

Share post:

Members of the WW-P Board of Education have recently discussed the possibility of eliminating the honor of valedictorian and salutatorian from our high schools. I do not understand. Why would the highest academic honors be dropped? Why should the students with the highest GPAs over their entire four years of high school not be recognized?

As a recently retired media specialist at High School South, I have seen how hard our students work and how important learning is to them. I have also seen how students work together and support each other and how happy they are for each other’s accomplishments. Their hard work and achievement should be recognized.

Students are honored for achievements in sports, the arts, and other areas, as well they should be. But they should also be recognized for their academic success. I do hope that the board will drop this item from future agendas.
