County offers energy assistance program to qualifying residents

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes announced that the county’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) can help qualifying residents with home energy costs.

LIHEAP is designed to help low-income families and individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs and allows qualifying individuals to apply for bill payment assistance, energy crisis assistance and energy-related home repairs.

To be eligible for LIHEAP benefits, the applicant household must be responsible for home heating or cooling costs (either directly or included in the rent) and have gross income at our below 200% of the federal poverty level. An eligibility chart can be found at nj.gov/counties/mercer/departments/pdfs/hcd_liheapinfo.pdf.

This year’s application period is between October 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015,

Clients may register at the McDade Administration Building, 640 South Broad Street, Trenton, Monday through Friday Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays until 6:30 p.m. or at County Connection, Route 33 at Paxson Avenue, Hamilton Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon by appointment only and Saturdays, October 11 and 25, November 8 and 22 and December 6 and 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Last year’s clients should receive a recertification form within the first week of the heating season, which begins on October 1.
