The Trenton Water Works boil water advisory will remain in effect for a second day, according to a TWW spokesman.
TWW has fixed the equipment malfunction that led the utility to issue an advisory to its customers in Ewing, Hamilton, Hopewell, Lawrence and Trenton early Sept. 27. But TWW still awaits testing results from the laboratory, and doesn’t expect them back until some point tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 28), TWW spokesman Michael Walker said. The boil water advisory cannot be lifted until lab results show the water is safe to consume.
TWW initially estimated that the advisory would last for just a few hours.
An equipment malfunction in TWW’s water distribution system caused chlorination levels in the water to dip to unsafe levels. Chlorine is used to disinfect the water and make it safe to consume.
All TWW customers should bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using or use bottled water. A statement issued by TWW said boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, preparing foods, mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks, washing vegetables and fruit, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Using the water for personal hygiene, such as showering and hand washing, but avoid swallowing any of the water.
TWW also recommended the following:
Discarding uncooked food, beverages, or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory. This includes any ice made by an refrigerator ice maker.Keeping boiled or bottled water in the refrigerator for drinking.Rinsing hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleacher gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle.Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.Using only boiled water to treat minor injuries.Providing pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).
