The Lawrence Hopewell Trail is set to host an Orienteering Word Scramble event as part of Hopewell Valley Come Out and Play activities.

Orienteering Word Scramble is a version of a treasure hunt. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 14 at Rosedale Park District of Mercer Meadows.

This walking adventure takes participants up and down hills, on and off the Lawrence Hopewell Trail, into wooded areas as well as open spaces as they look for clues that will give those letters for the word scramble.

An abbreviated course and word scramble will be offered for children.

To begin, participants gather at the LHT tent, which will be set up close to Rosedale Lake.

To play, hunters will walk to sites circled on a map, looking for the clues — one or more letters per site. By scrambling the letters they discover, they can come up with the winning words.

The first ten adults to finish with the correct word or words win an LHT water bottle, and the first 10 children to finish win a jump rope.

The entire walk for youngsters and adults is less than two miles, all within Rosedale Park.

Unlike in true orienteering, no compass will be necessary, and participants will not be timed.

Participants are asked to bring a pen or pencil to mark off the sites they have visited, to write down the letters and spell out the words.

All participants will be asked to complete a registration form. Those under age 18 will need a parent or guardian’s signature on the form to participate.

Registration for this and other Hopewell Valley Come Out and Play events is being offered through Hopewell Township Parks and Recreation at (609) 737-3753.
