Hopewell Township Mayor Kevin Kuchinski announced his candidacy for the 15th District New Jersey Assembly seat vacated by Reed Gusciora, who was elected last month to become the mayor of Trenton.

Kuchinski has served on the Hopewell Township Committee since 2015, and he was elected to serve as the township’s mayor in 2016.

“I will work tirelessly on behalf of all of the residents of the 15th District to take on the important issues and make progress, to build coalitions that move New Jersey forward, and to be a staunch advocate at the Statehouse,” Kuchinski said in a statement.

During his tenure in Hopewell politics, Kuchinski reduced spending by 5.9 percent since 2015, according to a statement from the mayor.

Over the past three years, Kuchinski said the township has maintained a tax rate of 1.6 percent per year, which is below the state’s 2 percent cap. Cumulatively, the committee has reduced township debt by almost 20 percent since 2014.

Kuchinski said under his tenure as mayor, Hopewell Township has rejected the anti-immigrant policies of the president, strengthened environmental protections, preserved open space, led the fight against PennEast, and the transition to renewable energy, winning New Jersey’s Solar Challenge, advocated for common-sense gun reforms, called for transparency in campaign financing, and expanded services to residents.

“I have progressive Democratic values, am a tenacious advocate, and will bring an independent voice to the legislature,” Kuchinski said.
