The Hopewell Branch of the Mercer County Library System will host a celebration honoring American abolitionist Frederick Douglass on Friday, Feb. 14, the date he chose for his birthday.
The event will begin at noon in the library’s community room with a live-streamed program from DouglassDay.org featuring speakers and music.
Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops between noon and 3 p.m. to join a transcribe-a-thon digitizing documents for the African American Perspectives Collection at the Library of Congress.
The celebration will continue with activities for youth and teens. From 3 to 4 p.m., Hope Rises Up will host a poetry slam, offering prizes for participants.
Youth and teens are invited to share their thoughts on civil rights and social justice through poetry, while teens may also submit artwork or essays on related topics for display.
Submissions are due to the Hopewell Branch by Monday, Feb. 10 and can be delivered in person to 245 Pennington Titusville Road, Pennington, or emailed to hopeprogs@mcl.org.
“Frederick Douglass was a giant in American history, and a visionary leader in the fight for freedom,” said Mercer County Executive Dan Benson. “We’re excited to invite residents of all ages to join us as we recognize and celebrate his inspiring legacy.”
