Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes opens the 2013 Mercer County Consumer Bowl by speaking to eight high school teams about the importance of becoming educated consumers Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013 at The Stone Terrace in Hamilton.
A team of students from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South won first place at the 2013 Mercer County Consumer Bowl Feb. 21 at The Stone Terrace by John Henry’s in Hamilton.
This is the second year WW-PHS’s team won the county’s Consumer Bowl. They will continue on to compete at the Central Jersey Regional Consumer Bowl set for Monmouth County on April 17.
The WW-PHS team consists of captain Matthew Sheffield, Peter Altamore, Ian Altamore, Joseph Wagner and William Wagner. The team’s adviser is teacher Maureen Leleszi.
WW-PHS beat seven other teams in a quiz-show style competition on good consumer practices. The compeition is hosted by the Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs, which created the Consumer Bowl in 1994 as a way to encourage students to become smarter consumers.
The division’s mission is to teach students to be wary of scams and unfair business practices and knowledgeable when obtaining services like home improvements or buying products such as vehicles or appliances.
Other schools that participated were Ewing High School, Hamilton High School West, Hightstown High School, Nottingham High School, Steinert High School, Villa Victoria Academy in Ewing and West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North.
