St. Gregory the Great students hold their Jar Races containers full of donations for Special Olympics athletes.

Saint Gregory the Great Academy students collected money to sponsor five athletes for the upcoming Special Olympics in New Jersey.

Students collected $5,000 through the second annual Jar Races competition, which took place during Catholic Schools Week in January.

Beginning on Jan. 27, each grade level competed against each other to collect the greatest number of pennies followed by nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday and finally dollars on Friday. Students donated $4,777 during the Jar Races.

The PTA made a final donation, bringing the total sponsorship to five athletes.

The annual USA Games will be held in New Jersey from June 14 to 21. A “Home Team” of 265 N.J. athletes will compete in more than 16 Olympic-style team and individual sports at venues across central New Jersey.
