Mercer County is planning signal upgrades and operational improvements on Hamilton Avenue at the intersection with Liberty Street and with Kuser Road and Ward Avenue.

A public information session will be held Wednesday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hamilton Township Municipal Building.

“A few years ago, the county installed a traffic light where Liberty comes into Hamilton at an angle,” George Fallat, acting Mercer County engineer said. “It helped, but not as much as we would have liked, so we took a deeper look.”

The recommendation now is to make Liberty Street one-way out, right-turn only onto Hamilton. Left turns from Hamilton to Liberty will be pushed south to Johnston Avenue, where a new signal will be installed.

“When we considered making Liberty one-way, in this one short segment, we had to look at Johnston,” Fallat said. “It turns out that traffic volumes there warranted a signal, even without providing for left-turn storage.”

County officials believe the new configuration at Liberty Street and signal at Johnston Avenue will improve traffic operations and safety at the two intersections.

Mercer County identified this section as a high vehicle crash location over the past few years. The proposed improvements would consist of operational improvements and safety improvements, including upgraded traffic signal equipment. If approved, construction would begin in the summer of 2019.

For more information on the project, attend the public information session on July 11 or contact Matthew Lawson, Mercer County principal transportation planner, mlawson@mercercounty.org or 609-989-6551.
