Local gymnast named state champion

Connections Gymnastics School’s level three and four gymnasts scored big at competitions in January.

Level three gymnasts competed in the state championship at Rutgers University on Jan. 18 and 19. Level four gymnasts competed in a state-level meet at Cresskill Recreational Center on Jan. 25.

The level three team includes Kendall Totten of Allentown, Mary Boyer, Ella Kinloch and Gianna Harris of Hamilton, and Zoe Sass of Robbinsville.

Totten set a New Jersey state vaulting record with a score of 9.9 and became the All-Around first place state champion in her age group, 9-year-old juniors. She came in second in bars, balance beam and floor.

Boyer took fourth place in vault with a score of 9.575.

Kinloch finished her season with an overall best by scoring a 9.0 and higher in every event. She finished in 11th place All-Around.

Sass took eighth place in the State Championship, scoring a 9.625 in vault and also medaled in balance beam and floor.

Harris earned personal best scores in all her events and placed in the All Around with a 34.925.

The level four team includes Erika Engler of Hamilton Square and Sydney Cobb of East Windsor.

In the 11-year-old age group, Engler climbed to the top of the podium on bars, becoming the first place state champion with a score of 9.55. She also placed fifth on vault, 13th on balance beam and sixth all-around with a score of 36.725.

10-year-old Cobb took second place on floor with a score of 9.4. She also placed on bars with a 9.0, and took eighth in the all-around with a top score of 36.275.

Both ranked among the top 10 in the state-within their respective age divisions.
