Allentown Borough Environmental Commission has received a $750 grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) for open space stewardship according to Greg Westfall, Chairman. ANJEC is a statewide organization that provides leadership, education, and support for environmental commissions and other local boards and public officials. The Allentown Environmental Commission’s mission is to promote and enhance the environmental quality of the Borough through natural resource protection, conservation, development and education.

The project application was supported by the Mayor and Borough Council. The grant will be used for tree planting at the Historic Episcopal Cemetery and Heritage Park in Allentown. Project partners include Allentown High School FFA, Boy Scouts Pack 180, Allentown LIONS Club, Allentown Garden Club, and The Allentown Village Initiative.

The tree planting initiative will have a positive impact on the recreational and picnic areas in Heritage Park and the Historic Episcopal Cemetery by providing shade, filtering and cleaning the air, reducing potential stormwater runoff and improving the overall environmental benefits of these open spaces.

Tree planting will take place in the fall at a date and time to be announced.

For further information or questions on the project contact (609) 259-6344.
