A local family is hosting a blood drive in honor of their son Daniel Jacob Applegate, who was diagnosed with Evans Syndrome/ALPS.

The blood drive will be held at the Bordentown Township Senior Center, 3 Municipal Dr., on Friday, Feb. 19 from 2-8 p.m. The Applegate family encourages all locals to come out and help children like Daniel who heavily rely on blood donations.

Daniel, now 12 years old and in the seventh grade, was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 9. Evans Syndrome is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system produces antibodies that mistakenly destroy red blood cells. He has received chemotherapy along with many transfusions of blood components.

You must be between the ages of 17 to 76 years old to donate blood and weigh at least 110 pounds. However, 16-year olds may donate with parental consent and people over the age of 76 can donate with a doctor’s note. Most medications will not keep people from donating blood. Please eat before you donate blood and bring an ID with proof of your age.

While walk-ins are welcome, participants are encouraged to make an appointment. For more information, or to make an appointment, go to tinyurl.com/daniel-08505 or call 1-800-933-BLOOD.
