Kelsey Theatre will kick off a season of “Matinee Masterpieces” on the West Windsor Campus of Mercer County Community College with Playful Theatre Productions’ “The SpongeBob Musical,” Sept. 19 through 28.

“The SpongeBob Musical” begins when the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, and SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up — but will the power of optimism really save the day?

“The SpongeBob Musical” features songs written by Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, Pennsylvanianic! At the Disco, John Legend, Sara Bareilles and David Bowie. While the cartoon series is geared towards elementary aged students, Kelsey Theatre says the musical is “smart, creative, and tackles important issues such as overcoming adversity, the harm our biases and prejudice can cause, and building confidence.”

“The SpongeBob Musical” cast includes Benjamin Weidner, West Deptford; Pat Rounds, Hamilton; Rebecca Schledwitz, Ewing; Michael Gilch, Asbury Park; Aiden Stallworth-Glitz, Ewing; Dan Keyser, East Windsor; Chrissy Johnson, Bordentown; Trinity Austin, Hamilton; William Kamps, Burlington; Denise Carey, Yardley, Pennsylvania; Lisa Ernst, Hightstown; Kori Wright, Bristol, Pennsylvania; Kacey Cavalieri, Lawrence; Megan Thompson, Hamilton; Juliana Davies, Pennington; Ed Forsthoffer, Hamilton; and Mark Shifton, Lawrence.

Also in the case are Aimée Robidoux, Levittown, Pennsylvania; Edgar Mariano, Hamilton; Anthony Fania, Burlington County; Caroline Kamps, Burlington; Michaela Huntley, Burlington City; Lindsey Grelis, Tabernacle; Kendal Plumstead, Flemington; Ethan Shaev, Robbinsville; Kheil Canono, Ewing; Mason DeGoria, Pennington; Sean Gavin, Allentown; and Tom Bessellieu, Lawrenceville.

Dates and showtimes for “The SpongeBob Musical” are Friday, Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 at 8 p.m., and matinee performances on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, 21 and Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. Performances are at the Kelsey Theatre on Mercer County Community College’s West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online or by calling the Kelsey Box Office Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon, at (609) 570-3333.

Kelsey Theatre is wheelchair accessible, with free parking next to the Theatre. For a complete listing of adult and children’s events, visit the Kelsey website or call the box office for a brochure.
