The Bordentown City Green Fair is set to return for the sixth straight year with more than 75 vendors and exhibits designed to educate and encourage people of all ages to adopt a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. The Green Fair is a free event sponsored by the Bordentown City Green Team and the Bordentown City Environmental Commission. This year’s event will take place rain or shine on Saturday, June 13, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Carslake Community Center, 207 Crosswicks Street, Bordentown City (accessible via the Bordentown River Line station).
This year’s fair is focused on informing the community on the difference that conscious efforts in conservation and recycling can make, and provide them with the tools they can use in their daily lives. In addition, the day is packed with live music, dance performances, a free yoga class and plant swap, local food, featured works by local artists and plenty of eco-friendly giveaways and prizes. A guided walking tour of Bordentown City’s oldest property, Gilder House, will also be available free to visitors.
Designed as an event for the whole family, all vendors and activities will be held at the Carslake Community Center. A variety of experts will be on hand to discuss energy production and conservation, local food production, health and wellness, plants and wildlife, alternative transportation, sustainable art, eco-friendly products and services, outdoor recreation and planning for a sustainable future.
Live music and entertainment will be performed by solo vocalists The Willamsboy and Jeff Griesemer, storyteller Denise McCormack and Karaoke the Clown. A Middle Eastern Dance demonstration by the Tehani Mid-East and Polynesian Dance Company will be featured at 1 p.m., and a performance by the Central NJ Ballet Theatre, Rising Star Central NJ Productions at 3 p.m. There is also a bike registration for city residents and collection for used bicycles, retired American flags and used CDs and DVDs on the premises. For those needing to destroy unneeded personal documents, there will be paper shredding from 2-4 p.m. (residential only).
The Bordentown City Environmental Commission is comprised of volunteers who are residents of Bordentown City and are appointed by the Mayor. The Bordentown City Green Team is an official sub-committee of the BCEC and made up of volunteers and is charged with implementing Action Items towards certification in the Sustainable Jersey program (sustainablejersey.com).
The BCEC advises local officials and the Planning Board regarding environmental issues and acts as a watchdog for environmental problems and opportunities. They inform elected officials and the public, serve on committees, research issues, develop educational programs and advocate for sound environmental policies. Local issues include preservation of open space, promoting walking and bicycling trails and the RiverLINE, protection of wetlands and water quality, recycling and energy conservation, and environmental education.
