Young Musicians Explore ‘Themes and Variations’ for Contest

Eight young musicians will be competing at Sinfonietta Nova’s second annual youth concerto competition on Sunday, January 20, at 4 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck in West Windsor. The recital includes performances from area musicians Tzuriel Tong on cello, and Tiffaney Hsia on violin. Along with six other young participants from all over New Jersey, they will be competing for the opportunity to play with Sinfonietta Nova’s March 9 concert. The program include works by Bruch, Saint-Saens, Weber, Brahms, Paganini, Vieuxtemps, Elgar, and Glazunov. The recital is free and open to the public.

Tzuriel Tong, 15, is a sophomore at High School South. He has been playing the cello for eight years. At South he is in the Philharmonia Orchestra and the orchestra council. Outside of school he is in the CJMEA Regional Orchestra, the New Jersey All-State Orchestra, and both the band and orchestra at his church. An amateur song writer and music producer, Tong has a home recording studio.

Tiffaney Hsia, 14, a freshman at High School South, is concertmaster of the school’s orchestra String Ensemble. She has received numerous awards, and has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Concert Hall and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Sinfonietta Nova, based in West Windsor, is well into its fifth successful season as one of central New Jersey’s established regional orchestras. Gail H. Lee of West Windsor is both the artistic director and conductor.

Continuing this season’s exploration of Theme & Variations, the winter concert will take place on Saturday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m., at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in West Windsor. The program includes Symphonic Variations by Antonin Dvor k, Mozartiana by Peter Tchaikovsky, Theme and Variations of Erich Korngold, and Variations on a Shaker Theme by Aaron Copland.

West Windsor and Plainsboro musicians performing in the concert include Alan Amira, Mark Bassett, Emma Coleman, Geoffrey Fleming, Joseph Hetman, as well as Suzanne Dicker and Theresa Liu, both graduates of High School South.
