Andy Clarke, the executive director of the League of American Bicyclists, will be the guest speaker at the West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance’s annual meeting on Thursday, February 25.

During the meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the municipal building, the WWBPA plans to discuss its key priorities for 2010, including Route 571.

The group’s focus has been on Route 571, where the county and state have created plans for a three-lane road — with one lane in each direction and a center turning lane — and sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of the roadway from its intersection with Wallace and Cranbury roads, east to its intersection with Clarksville Road.

Plans also depicted two lanes in each direction at the three major intersections on Route 571: Cranbury and Wallace roads, Alexander Road, and Clarksville Road — which would taper down to one lane after each intersection.

The WWBPA, however, has released a list of recommendations for improvements for Route 571. The group has said it feels strongly that the design is not bicycle or pedestrian friendly and does not meet key township and state objectives, policies and/or guidelines. The group has pointed to an incident in November in which a West Windsor resident was hit by a car as he was crossing at the corner of Route 571 (Princeton-Hightstown Road) and Wallace Road at 6 p.m. during rush hour.
