West Windsor Council is expected to vote November 21 on a measure that asks the U.S. Postal Service to change the name of the township’s 08550 ZIP code from Princeton Junction to West Windsor.##M:[more]##

Postal officials have said they are agreeable to the change as long as they receive an official request from the council in the form of a resolution. If the name is changed, residents would be allowed to use either West Windsor or Princeton Junction as their mailing address.

The change was prompted by Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh, who believes that the changing the ZIP code name is appropriate because the ZIP code covers the majority of West Windsor, not just the junction. Residents and businesses in the Princeton ZIP code (08540) section of the township would not be affected by the change.

“This change will not require residents or businesses to change their stationery or business cards,” said Hsueh in a letter to the News. “Princeton Junction can still be used by those who want to keep this designation. What this change will provide is the identity for all of West Windsor in postal databases that are distributed worldwide and a unified designation for one single post office which serves the majority of West Windsor.”

He added: “I have asked the Council to vote for this change in order to recognize all of the villages of West Windsor and not just one which, historically, was the name of the ZIP code because it was home to our only post office. This action will ensure recognition for West Windsor on national maps.”
