West Windsor is growing faster than any other town in Mercer County. The U.S. Census bureau released its new population estimates on June 27. Its statistics show the township has grown 20 percent since 2000, and 1.2 percent in a year.##M:[more]##

The county as a whole has grown by 4.8 percent since 2000, and by 0.4 percent between 2005 and 2006. West Windsor is estimated to have 26,”279 residents.

“The reason is this is a very attractive place to professionals,” said Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh. He said the Toll Brothers development, which began selling homes in 2002, is the main reason for the population explosion.

Hsueh has been a supporter of the redevelopment project which would likely bring another influx of residents to the township. Hsueh said redevelopment planning would put future growth rates in the hands of the township. “The redevelopment is a long term plan. If there is an impact, the township will have direct control. With our current zoning, the developers can come when ever they want.”
