The West Windsor-Plainsboro school board has approved salary increases for the upcoming school year for its two assistant superintendents.

Larry Shanok, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and the board secretary, will see a 2.4 percent increase in salary from $165,854 to $170,000 for the 2011-’12 school year.

David Aderhold, the district’s assistant superintendent of pupil services, will receive a 3 percent increase from $144,000 to $148,320.

The contracts were approved at the board’s meeting on June 28.

The salaries were approved as part of the annual contract renewal with the district’s administrators. Superintendent Victoria Kniewel’s contract is the only one that is approved for multiple years.

Kniewel’s salary — and all other conditions of her contract — will remain the same for the 2011-’12 school year. Last June the board approved a four-year contract extension for Kniewel, whose contract would have expired. The extension keeps her contract in place until June 30, 2015. Kniewel’s salary was frozen for the 2010-’11 school year at $192,676.

Last year Kniewel asked that 1.5 percent of her base salary be contributed toward her health insurance costs beginning last July, rather than waiting until the mandated date of July 1, 2012, as required by state law.

School Board President Hemant Marathe noted that both Shanok and Aderhold took a salary freeze in the 2010-’11 school year.

“We really appreciate their performance,” he said. “Since they took a zero percent increase last year, we didn’t think it was fair to take another zero percent increase this year. Good performance should be recognized. This was just recognition of their leading the district through a very difficult time.”

In addition, Marathe said the district has continued to reduce the number of administrators over the past few years, which means responsibility is spread among the remaining central office staff.

“We continue to increase the demands on administrators, so they have taken additional responsibilities also,” he said of Shanok and Aderhold.

Replacement for Lazovick? School board officials said at the June 28 meeting that interviews of candidates to replace Russell Lazovick, the district’s former assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will begin over the summer.

In the meantime, Aderhold will handle his responsibilities. The board approved a stipend of $3,000 per month that will be paid to Aderhold in the interim.

Lazovick resigned on June 30 to become superintendent in Nutley.
