Traffic Calming on Fisher Place?

A group of 40 residents living near the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Fisher Place in West Windsor is urging the township to take action to make their neighborhood safer from the drivers who use the area as a cut-through from Washington Road.

Larry Cohen, a resident of Fisher Place, presented the petition of 40 signatures to the Township Council during the June 27 meeting, telling the council that drivers in the area “frequently exceed the speed limit.”

The residents are asking for a three-way stop at the corner of Fairview and Fisher, as well as other traffic-calming measures along the road to “try to keep the traffic from going above the posted speed limits,” said Cohen.

“I think he has some legitimate concerns,” said West Windsor Police Chief Joseph Pica, responding to Cohen at the meeting.

Pica said the roads were not under the jurisdiction of the county or state, meaning there would be less red tape involved in trying to remedy the problem. “This should be easier if we can help them out with this,” he said.

Pica said he would ask officers to radar the area for speeders. But in terms of long-term improvements, the township’s engineering department would have to perform surveys, prepare reports, and go through the process before any permanent traffic safety measures were implemented.

Any action would then have to be approved by the Township Council.
